Why I Like Morning Brew (No, Not Coffee). . . Ok, Coffee, Too!

Hey there, media folks! Thanks for reading another edition of the blog. This week, we’ll be looking at Morning Brew, a newsletter that a friend showed me back in early 2019 (shoutout Meray). I’ll be going over some background and discussing what makes it a good newsletter.

Founded in 2015 by Alex Lieberman and Austin Rief, Morning Brew is a media company that is dedicated “to helping you, the business leader of tomorrow, become smarter in minutes.” Morning Brew’s staff does this by compiling the top stories of the day and breaking them down into digestible bits (there are other newsletters Morning Brew produces, but I’m focused on the original).

Morning Brew is an example of a Daily News newsletter – one that “is focused on news of value to your coverage area,” (Scheidt, 2018). In this instance, the coverage areas are breaking news, business news, and market trends. No one will become an expert in any one topic, but one will find themselves well-informed by reading Morning Brew. One will know how the stock market closed the previous day as well as read on topics regarding food, law, and more. I appreciate the business insight for laypeople (and of course, memes).

This NPR article highlights how to create a sustainable daily newsletter. Scheidt notes that sending the newsletter at consistent times each day along with incentivizing readers to engage will ensure success. Morning Brew is ready for me to sit back and enjoy each morning when I get to my desk. Additionally, there are puzzles, quizzes, and referral programs that readers can cash in on.

Morning Brew knows its lane and sticks to it. If you want to sign up for Morning Brew or any of their other newsletters, here’s a link!
